Church Apprenticeship

From Summer 2018

We are looking for at least four apprentices to join the team for one year from August 2018. Applicants need to be eager to serve humbly, demonstrate a good grasp of Christian truth and knowledge of the Bible, model Christian living and have a genuine interest in exploring whether paid Christian ministry is for them. Apprentices have normally been new or recent graduates, both men and women, some from our own church family and some from other churches across the UK and the world.

Throughout the year we hope to provide a helpful experience in the context of training, mentoring and practical service, as well as a high level of pastoral care from members of the staff team. The three main components of the year include:

1) Bible and pastoral ministry training: in particular, attending the TEAM course, weekly Bible training sessions with our Ministry Trainer Christopher Ash (former director of the Cornhill training scheme) as well as weekly lunches with our vicar, Alasdair Paine, to learn about teaching and preaching the Bible.
2) Bible teaching experience: each apprentice will have opportunities to lead Bible studies, give talks, help lead children's groups and hold regular one-to-one meetings with undergraduates.
3) Practical service: this is a varied and crucial aspect of the apprenticeship, helping to enable ministry throughout the church as well as an opportunity to grow in humble service and Christian character.

To apply please send your CV and covering letter explaining why you want to be an apprentice to our Church Manager, Tom Beaumont (

A grant is available to each apprentice to cover living costs, and accommodation near the church is provided free of charge.

Pastor for 20s and 30s

From Summer 2018

Our motto as a church is “the gospel to Cambridge; gospel workers to the world.” Over many years now one of the aims of our ministry has been to send out godly, mature Christians who will serve our Saviour, His gospel and His people in various settings across the UK and around the world.

Our work amongst those in their 20s and 30s is a crucial aspect of this ‘sending out’ work. We are looking to recruit a candidate to oversee 'HUB', our discipleship programme for 20s and 30s. This post will serve as part of the senior staff team and carry significant responsibility.

We are looking for someone of godly character and sound in Christian faith, who shares our aims and ethos, is an excellent communicator of God’s Word, and is able to handle it responsibly. They must be a ‘people person’, glad to work in a team, eager to learn and willing to suffer for the gospel.

The role could be filled by someone already ordained in the Church of England, someone already serving on the ministry team of a free church, or in the final year of theological college.

Youth worker

From Summer 2018

St Andrew the Great is a city centre church in Cambridge. The congregation is a mixture of residents of Cambridge and students. Our aim is ‘The gospel to Cambridge, gospel workers to the world.’

We are seeking to recruit a full-time youth worker, to support and develop our well-established work across the 11-18 age range and, in particular, to lead our 14-18s work. The role involves planning and delivering Bible teaching and other youth events, training and encouraging other youth work leaders, and pastoral care and evangelism with young people. We would provide appropriate training and oversight and opportunities to be involved in other aspects of church life, dependent on experience and gifts. The post-holder will have relevant training in Bible teaching, have experience of work with teenagers and be in agreement with the church's ethos.
